5 Key Success Factors of an IT Organisation

September 19, 2008

From my observations in over 30 companies over two decades, the following are the vital consideration points for an IT organisation. There are of course more but I only look at it from sustained success and balanced growth from a 40 thousand feet high:

1. Governance: A well governed IT organisation with use of global frameworks like ITIL, COBIT, CMI etc will help drive the organisation.

2. Compliance: This is a key pain point for any C level IT professionals such as CIOs, CTOs, COOs etc. Each industry has their compliance requirements. Security is one of the significant ones.

3. Emerging technologies: Whilst the first and second keep the “status quo” for smooth run of an organisation, focusing on this item will help stretching and keeping an IT organisation lively to sustain its market place.

4. Innovation: This is essential for every company to stay competitive. It is an ongoing activity like a heart beat or breathing for a person to stay alive. This is where your products and services add better value to others.

5. Diversity/Globalism/Collaboration. These are key factors for growth. Synergies are created. Rather than competing a collaborative effort will help us sustain our success together. All wins.

Based on these 5 key points, I would like to obtain your views on:
1. How is the IT organisation/fuction in your company governed?
2. What does innovation mean to your organisation? And how open are you to new technologies?
3. How diverse is your organisation? How do you collaborate internally and externally?

Your insights will be useful. We will be discussing these points in our IT Business Philosophyclub. Join us and keep yourself thinking and informed. Collaboration is essential for sustained success.
